The Met Gala 2017: A Disaster
The 1st of May is a special day in the fashion industry. This is the day where the creative area of fashion comes out and many designers can showcase their designs and that is The Met Gala. I always like The Met Gala. I've always like looking at the dresses and see the different themes every year, but I didn't understand the purpose of it and why it occurs every May 1st. It wasn't until I started really fashion that I started understanding its purpose and the importance of FOLLOWING THE THEME OF THIS EVENT. As you all know, this year's Met Gala was a disaster and I'll explain why.
I'll give you a little background on The Met Gala.
The Met Gala is a fundraising event for the benefit of the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Institute in New York City. All the funds that are raised go to the schools' art program. The Met Gala has a theme every year in honor of the school's Costume Institution exhibition. The guests are expected to follow the theme that is chosen or at least should try to emulate what the theme is about(!!!!!!!).
This year's theme was about Rei Kawakubo.
She is a fashion designer from Japan and is the founder of Comme Des Garcons which means "like some boys." Her designs focus on ani-fashion, austere, and destructed garments. Rei designs are the epitome of creativity and imagination.
Let's put it this way... her designs aren't something you would wear to a family function.
On this year's Met Gala red carpet, you only saw that there were a couple guests dressed according to the theme.
The rest were at the wrong red carpet event.
It made me so frustrated that the DESIGNERS of these dresses failed to emulate what Rei and her brand stood for. The Met Gala is not some other red carpet event. IT IS THE MET GALA. It celebrates art and creativity and the attire that some of the guests were wearing were just boring and unimaginative.
To think that so-called "fashion journalists" would call Rihanna's look "bizarre" and "outrageous" when she was one of the few who actually followed the theme
If you were "fashion journalists" you would know the theme, you would know the designer, you would know that the guests would have to dress according to the theme. I bet Google doesn't tell you that, doesn't it?
This year's Met Gala was incredibly lackluster and boring. It was an utter disaster and I hope next years is going to be better.
